In this article, we bring you a wide range of knowledge that will help you with informative speech topics in college as well as high school.
Global warming, as the term itself suggests, is the consistent rise in the overall average temperature of the planet and it happens because of greenhouse gases (GHGs) which cause pollution. The principal greenhouse gas is Carbon-dioxide and others are Methane, Nitrous oxide, Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), Sulphuric fluoride, Ozone, Carbon tetrachloride, etc. It is a fact that the worst effect of air pollution is its adverse effect on the climate. Industries are growing like mushrooms. They are producing the abovementioned greenhouse gases which cause a rise in temperature. Scientists and environmentalists are fearful of this rise in temperature, as it can bring about various long-term changes in the climatic conditions of the earth. Hence, some concrete steps are to be taken against them. Otherwise, these changes will ultimately turn harmful for the survival of life on the earth. As per the latest report, global warming over the next century might turn out to be much worse than estimated. If the emission of greenhouse gases is stabilized, which means an immediate cut of 60-70% emission of Carbon dioxide globally, even then the rise of atmospheric temperature would be one-degree centigrade and the rise in sea level would be approximately one meter. Based on the findings of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Centre predicted that warming over land could lead to a six-degree centigrade rise in temperature by 2100, i.e. two-degree centigrade higher than the earlier estimates, at the current rate of emissions.

Effects Of Global Warming:-
The greenhouse gases, including CFC-11 and CFC-12, make the earth hotter and hotter by absorbing the maximum quantity of thermal radiation of the Sun. These gases permit the rays of the Sun to penetrate but do not let the thermal radiation escape from the earth's atmosphere once they enter it, thus causing what is called the greenhouse effect which may increase in the temperature all over the world. Another change that global warming has brought about is the reduction of forests. As a result of global warming, the rain has become scanty, the salinity of the water has increased, and the entire water cycle stands disturbed. Moreover, due to global warming, a variety of seasons has been reduced, the tenure of summer has increased over the years and there is practically no season left untouched, especially in the tropical and sub-tropical regions. Besides the above phenomena, global warming, i.e. the change in temperature, may fluctuate the rain cycle, ecological balance, the cycle of seasons and adversely affects vegetation and agriculture as a result of which we have to face frequent floods and droughts throughout the world. With the warming of the planet, there is also a rise in humidity, because the rise in temperature has increased the rate of evaporation. There is also a danger of coastal regions drowning due to an increase in sea level with the shrinking of glaciers. Thus, there is a grave danger of an entire civilization becoming extinct in a watery grave. Animals and plants are also finding it difficult to cope with these temperature changes. Human life is also getting affected by global warming. Epidemics are spreading frequently. Diseases like dengue, yellow fever and encephalitis have witnessed an unprecedented rise. In view of the above, now, it is the right time to give a wake-up call against global warming as well as climate change. Definitely, governments all over the world are very much concerned about the above issues for which many summits/ conferences have been held. At Rio de Janeiro in 1992, in Japan in 1997, in Durban in 2011, again at Rio de Janeiro in 2012, at Warsaw in 2013 and at Paris in 2015, the representatives of the countries across the world gathered to discuss ways to prevent further warming of the planet by taking all possible measures. Various protocols were signed during these summits to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases by the developed nations, but the same is still awaited for its full implementation by them.
Agreements and treaties signed at the international level will not alone help in reducing global warming. Serious, concrete and concerted efforts should be made at national and regional levels for such a purpose as well. The people living in that area and the governments should warn the emissions of greenhouse gases by modernizing the vehicles, creating awareness among the people, selling environment-friendly appliances, encourage recycling of paper, metal, and glass, etc. Such efforts are needed by the people at the grass-roots level. Only then, we can be able to combat the serious problem of global warming in an effective way. In a nutshell, global warming has become a grave threat to the ecological balance of the earth. Civilization is moving slowly towards a doomsday. All the nations, particularly the most industrialized and developed countries, have to be active to take immediate action, otherwise, the human race shall have to face unimaginable perils and the theme-based slogan—`Global Warming: a wake-up call—will have no meaning or visible impact
